BISMARCK, N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven today announced that three fire departments will receive grants from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program. Lidgerwood Rural Fire Protection District will receive $19,712, New Salem Fire Department will receive $237,500, and Portal International Fire Department will receive $118,750. Grant money is used for training, to enhance operations and safety and vehicle and equipment acquisition. Since FY 2001, and including FY 2007, nearly $19 million in AFG funding has been distributed to 292 North Dakota fire departments and first responder organizations.
The grant program, administered by DHS's Office for State and Local Government Coordination and Preparedness (SLGCP) in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), was established to ensure that America's first responders have the resources they need to protect their communities and themselves.
