Severe Summer Storms

Severe summer storms can affect relatively small areas and may spawn several damaging activities: thunderstorms, lightning, hail, flash floods and tornadoes. These activities can devastate crops, injure or kill people and animals and destroy property. Planning and preparedness measures should be considered for all of the hazards during the approach of severe summer weather. North Dakota averaged 22 tornadoes each year from 1950 to 2006. In 2006, 25 tornadoes were reported in North Dakota. The use of an All-Hazards radio may provide advance warning of impending severe summer storms.
