Low Income Assistance Programs
Community Food and Nutrition Program
The Community Food and Nutrition program is funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. These funds are used to support small projects through discretionary grants aimed at supporting statewide efforts that: coordinate existing private and public food assistance resources aimed at better serving low-income populations; assist low-income communities in identifying potential sponsors of child nutrition programs and to initiate new programs in under-served areas; and that develop innovative approaches at the state and local levels to meet the nutrition needs of low-income people.
The “Hunger in the Heartland” conference, a North Dakota World Food Day Event, was held in Grand Forks, ND on October 13 and 14, 2004. Sponsors of the event were the ND Community Action Association, ND Department of Agriculture, ND Department of Commerce Division of Community Services, ND State University Extension Service, Red River Valley Community Action, University of ND College of Business and Public Administration, and US Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service Grand Forks Nutrition Research Center.

Community Food and Nutrition funds were awarded to NDSU Extension Service to create a cookbook providing economical recipes and tips to stretch your budget. The cookbook incorporates menu planning, food safety and provides suggestions on how to cook with foods such as dry milk, dried cranberries and venison. The cookbooks are being distributed by the Community Action Agencies, NDSU Extension, the Family Nutrition Program and the Extended Food and Nutrition Education Program, and are now on-line on the NDSU FoodWi$e website: www.ag.ndsu.edu/foodwise/recipies.
