Photographer Meghan Kirkwood brings images of an arid grassland region in South Africa to Northwest Art Center viewers in “Historical Landscapes: South African Environments Through the Lens,”

“Nestled beneath the foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains this temperate landscape forms a unique biome that is filled with aloes and rare cycads,” writes Kirkwood in a description of her subject.

Children's Stories from Around the World: by Maroah Lowry

For the project, Lowry selected seven children’s stories, each representing a culture from one of the world’s continents, created illustrations, and then crafted each story into a handmade book. Lowry used different art media, papers, book binding techniques, and illustration styles to reflect the origins of each tale.

“Lint in My Pocket” and “That Moment You Know You’re Not Alone”

“Lint in My Pocket” and “That Moment You Know You’re Not Alone”

Fargo painter Emily Williams-Wheeler draws inspiration from the bits of random color and textures that make up the lint from a dryer’s trap. “At first glance, it appears grey, but if you look closely, one will find that it is more complicated than that,” said Williams-Wheeler. An exhibit of her acrylic paintings and encaustics (pigmented beeswax and resin).
