Tourism web site and listings
Don't forget to take advantage of some free marketing that's available via Tourism! You can link to their activities website in a flash, and add your activities so that tourists and locals alike can have notice of your exhibitions, performances and events.
 
Accessibility Convening
Save the date! We are very pleased to offer an Accessibility Convening on April 21, 2020, at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum. We will focus on the importance of accessibility within organizational operations, facilities and programming, as well as within social media. Other topics will include getting to know "Arts Access for All," and learning accessibility tips and best practices. This free Convening is scheduled to run from 9:30am to 4:30pm. More information and a finalized agenda is coming soon!
 
Is anyone out there interested in writing a an article or two? It would be great to hear from you. These could be feature pieces on an organization or individual, or a project that is taking place in ND and could be replicated elsewhere.

Legislative Engagement
Make use of the information recently emailed to NDCA grantees, and connect with your Legislator as well as your NDCA Region Board Member!
 
Creative Placemaking
We are busy planning the next steps of NDCA’s Creative Placemaking – Joining ND’s Eight Regions Program. This involves planning, budgeting and fundraising. If you are interested in participating in the formation of one of the eight Regional Stakeholder Councils, be in touch.
 
Guidelines/grant applications
We continue to try and simplify the NDCA grant application process. As you’ll see below, we’ve announced dates of availability. Once you are involved in the process, please let us know how we did… Remember, some things we can change and others we cannot!


NDCA's official online Guide to North Dakota Art and Cultural Destinations launched!

The online Guide to North Dakota Art and Cultural Destinations was officially launched in December! If you have a listing, please verify your information is correct. If you are not listed but would like to be, please visit the "About" page. This guide was compiled by NDCA with the traveler in mind, providing a comprehensive listing of arts organizations, cultural centers, galleries, and artist studios that they may easily access and add to their vacation plans. Share this site and help get the word out!


NDCA announces North Dakota artist’s work on exhibit at the Capitol

NDCA, along with the offices of State Treasurer Kelly Schmidt, and Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem, as well as Governor Burgum, are exhibiting the works of Fargo artist Andrew Stark at the Capitol Building in Bismarck during the months of January, February and March. Stark’s colorful and layered work is on display in the Treasurer’s third floor office, the Attorney General’s first floor office, and in the Governor’s ground floor staff offices.* For more...

NDCA grant guidelines and applications update

  • FY 21 Grant guidelines and applications for the Folk and Traditional Arts Apprenticeship grants will be open and available by January 15;
  • The Arts in Education Collaboration, Community Arts Access Tiers 1 & 2, and the Individual Artist Fellowship grants will be open and available by February 1;
  • The three grant programs with rolling deadlines (Professional Development, Special Projects and Artist in Residence) will be open and available on May 1.
These are all for programs that begin July 1, 2020 and end by June 30, 2021. Watch for announcements on our Facebook page!


The ND State Poetry Out Loud competition set for Monday, February 24, 2020

Be sure to attend NDCA's State Poetry Out Loud (POL) Competition on Monday, February 24, 2020, at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum. This year 23 North Dakota schools are registered to compete. Round 1 competition begins at 9:30 am followed by lunch. Rounds 2 and 3 will resume at approximately 1:15pm. All POL State Finals events are free and open to the public. For more information visit www.ndpol.com.

Grant gives more Jamestown students access to music lessons

Cheryl McIntyre, choir and music theory teacher at Jamestown High School, said music plays a "crucial" role in the development of a student during their education. McIntyre said this led her to apply for the Arts in Education Collaborative Grant from the North Dakota Council on the Arts, which Jamestown Public Schools received last September. For more...

Demystify financial management in this six-week webinar series uncovering best practices and easy shifts to enhance your organizational efficiency. The North Dakota Association of Nonprofit Organization's Financial Leadership Tips and Tools, starts January 23, and will cover the how-to’s of financial management topics essential to nonprofits so you can spend less time worrying about your budget and more time fulfilling your mission.

FY 2020 funding passes with arts priorities included

Americans for the Arts announced that in December Congress passed federal government funding for fiscal year (FY) 2020! In 2019, Americans for the Arts had five priorities in the appropriations process—NEA and NEH funding increase, arts education funding, creative arts therapies support in both the Defense and Veterans Affairs bills, and arts-specific programming for at-risk youth in the Justice bill. The 12 appropriations bills passed in two separate bundles with overwhelming bipartisan support.


National Endowment for the Arts FY 2021 funding guidelines posted

Guidelines and application materials for four National Endowment for the Arts funding categories— Grants for Arts Projects, Challenge America, Creative Writing Fellowships and Literature Fellowships for Translation Projects—are available on the Arts Endowment’s website. We urge you to consider applying to the Endowment; if assistance is needed, contact us or the Endowment staff directly. Transforming Community Development through Arts and Culture

In December the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco released the November 2019 edition of the Community Development Innovation Review which explores the power of arts and culture to transform the practice of community development. Featured authors include artists, developers, bankers and researchers (including the National Assembly of State Art Agencies)—all exploring how creative processes contribute to vibrant places and expand opportunities for low-income neighborhoods.

The Arts Midwest Touring Fund engages people in meaningful experiences with the fine arts of dance, music, theater or musical theater, and other performing arts forms. When we share creative experiences, we build powerful connections with the people we’re closest to, with our community and the world around us, and with ourselves. Funds must be used directly to offset the touring artist’s fee. For more...

World Health Organization report on arts and health

A new report from the World Health Organization, What Is the Evidence on the Role of the Arts in Improving Health and Well-being? synthesizes findings from more than 900 articles related to the arts and both mental and physical health outcomes. The results of the meta-analysis found growing evidence to support arts interventions in health care and also found that certain arts interventions had economic benefits as well—showing equivalent or greater cost-effectiveness compared to other possible health interventions. The report concludes with policy considerations, encouraging more inclusive arts-based health programs and strengthening partnerships between health and arts sectors.

Digital accessibility continues to pick up steam with more organizations realizing its value and more individuals developing awareness and expertise every day.
