National Organizations

  • Americans for the Arts, formerly the National Assembly of Local Arts Agencies and Americans for the Arts. This national organization works to advance support for the arts and culture in our nation's communities.

  • Americans for the Arts 2003 Annual Convention. From June 7 - 9, 2003, the largest convention of arts administrators, advocates, patrons, and other arts leaders from across the country met in Portland, Oregon. 

  • American Association of Museums, Assists museum staff, boards, and volunteers across the country to better serve the public through advocacy, professional education, information exchange, accreditation, and guidance on current professional standards of performance.

  • American Dance Guild, Inc., non-profit membership organization concerned with promoting the art of dance.

  • American Folklore Society, membership organization for academic and public folklorists.

  • American Symphony Orchestra League, links a national network of thousands of musicians, conductors, managers, board members, volunteers, staff members, and business partners, providing a wealth of services, information, and educational opportunities to its members.

  • Artists' Health Insurance Resource Center, The AHIRC database was created in 1998 by The Actors’ Fund of America, with a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, as a health insurance resource for artists and people in the entertainment industry.

  • Artist Help Network, a free information service designed to assist artists in locating information, resources, guidance, and advice on a comprehensive range of career-related topics.

  • ArtsWire, a national bulletin board for the arts.

  • Chamber Music America, promotes artistic excellence and economic stability within the profession, and ensures that chamber music, in its broadest sense, is a vital part of American life.

  • Dance/USA, a national service organization for not-for-profit professional dance.

  • Folger Shakespeare Library, private research institution and the world's most significant repository of Shakespearean material.

  • The Foundation Center, information for grant seekers and grant makers.

  • Hardanger Fiddle Association of America. The HFAA is nonprofit organization preserving and promoting traditional Norwegian folk music and dance in North America and home of the Internet's first (since 1994) and most comprehensive site devoted to Norway's national instrument, the hardingfele.

  • National Assembly of State Arts Agencies, a national membership organization that promotes the arts and the works of state arts agencies.

  • National Endowment for the Arts, the federal agency that supports and promotes all forms of art in the United States and its territories.

  • National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts, non-profit arts organization which, through the Arts Recognition and Talent Search (ARTS), identifies emerging artists and assists them in their educational and professional development; and raises appreciation and support of the arts in American society.

  • National Gallery of Art, created in 1937 by a joint action by Congress, accepting the gift of financier and art collector Andrew W. Mellon.

  • National Governor's Association Issue Briefs. The series showcases the ways in which the arts help states address their most pressing policy challenges.

  • OPERA America, serves and strengthens the field of opera by providing a variety of informational, technical, and administrative resources to the greater opera community.

  • President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, established by Executive Order in 1982 to help restore and incorporate the arts and humanities in government objectives, the Committee serves the Administration by advising on the effectiveness of these endeavors, providing a mechanism for interagency collaboration, and undertaking projects extending the reach and quality of national arts and the humanities programs.

Arts Education

  • American Alliance for Theatre and Education, a national membership organization that promotes standards of excellence in theatre and theatre education.

  • Arts Education Partnership, formerly the Goals 2000 Arts Education Partnership - a national coalition of arts, education, business, philanthropic, and government organizations that promotes the role of the arts in learning and development. Recently published the report Critical Links: Learning in the Arts and Student Academic and Social Development.

  • Educational Theater Association, professional organization for teachers of theatre and theatre professionals at all levels.

  • Getty Education Institute for the Arts (ArtsEdNet), a program of the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Institute is dedicated to improving arts education in the schools.

  • Imagine Mars Project, a national arts, science, and education initiative sponsored by NASA and the National Endowment for the Arts. Building on the successes of the Mars Millennium Project, this site provides simple lesson plans and resources for K-12 students to design a futuristic Mars community. Students explore their own communities and decide which arts, scientific, and cultural elements will be important on Mars. 

  • Institute of Museum and Library Services, federal agency which funds museums directly so that they may better serve the public through exhibits and educational programs that promote cultural and historic heritage.

  • International Network of Performing and Visual Schools, member organization that serves the leaders of specialized arts schools internationally.

  • The Kennedy Center's ArtsEdge, linking arts and education through the technology.

  • The Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network, a coalition of 46 state Alliance organizations, operating in partnership with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to support policies, practices, and partnerships.

  • National Art Education Association, national non-profit organization of professionals of every level involved in arts education.

  • National Association for Music Education, national membership organization to advance music education as a profession and ensure that every child in America has access to a balanced high-quality education that includes music as a core subject of study.

  • National Dance Education Organization, membership organization which develops and promotes the art of dance through professional development, service, and leadership.

  • National Guild of Community Schools for the Arts, service organization that provides direction, technical and artistic assistance, publications, and seed money to state arts centers without arts education.

  • National Network for Folk Arts Education, links folklorists, folk artists, and other cultural specialists working in elementary and secondary education.

  • North Dakota Department of Public Instruction, state agency responsible for the establishment and maintenance of public schools and related programs, supervision of the North Dakota Schools for the Deaf and Blind, and the State Library.

  • North Dakota Arts Alliance/Alliance for Arts Education is a state network dedicated to advocacy for the arts and arts education.

  • Prairie Public Broadcasting's Prairie School Television, offers programming and videos that help teach several subjects, including foreign language and the arts.

  • Teachers and Writers Collaborative, non-profit organization that brings writers and educators together in collaborations that explore the connections between writing and reading literature and that generate news ideas and materials.

  • VSA Arts, international organization that promotes arts education and creative expression involving children and adults with disabilities.

  • Young Audiences, national arts organization advocating quality arts education for all children.

Lewis and Clark

  • Keel Boats by A.C. Butch Bouvier, Replicas of keel boats are on display at Lewis and Clark State Park on Blue Lake near Onawa, Iowa. These keel boats were researched, designed, and constructed by A.C. Butch Bouvier with the dedicated help of many local volunteers. They are the property of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

  • Lewis and Clark in North Dakota. In 1804, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark led an expedition up the Missouri River on their way to the Pacific Ocean. In North Dakota they met a young Shoshone woman named Sakakawea who helped guide them to the Yellowstone River the following year. They also spent the winter of 1804-1805 here.

  • Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail, located in eleven states: Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, Nebraska, Oregon, South Dakota, Washington.

  • Lewis and Clark Tours, join the journey by covered wagon or horseback as we follow Lewis and Clark's path up the beautiful Missouri River.

  • Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation, coordinates national efforts to promote the heritage of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

  • National Geographic - Lewis and Clark: Great Journey West, National Geograhpic's new large-format film. With stunning aerial cinematography and meticulous recreations, Lewis and Clark dramatizes the legendary early 19th-century expedition that crossed the uncharted North American West.

  • National Geographic - Lewis and Clark Online Base Camp. Encamped in uncharted territory, Lewis and Clark surely wondered what lay beyond the crackle and hiss of each night's campfire - and what lay ahead. Gather round the flames for National Geographic's tales of high adventure.

  • Lewis & Clark Fort Mandan Foundation. The Foundation is a nonprofit organization which manages and maintains Fort Mandan and the North Dakota Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center. Fort Mandan was the Wintering Post of the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1804-1805. At Fort Mandan this military expedition was befriended by the Mandan and Hidatsa Tribes, who showed them how to survive the often-brutal winter. Sakakawea joined the Expedition here.

  • North Dakota Lewis and Clark Resource Collection, guided by the North Dakota Lewis & Clark Resource Coalition, a group of partners committed to bringing the history and valuable education of the Lewis & Clark Expedition to K-12 classrooms.  

  • PBS Online: "Lewis and Clark", Lewis & Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery, a film by Ken Burns.

  • University of Virginia Library. Exploring the West from Monticello: A Perspective in Maps from Columbus to Lewis and Clark.
