At the Fiddler's Knee
I've learned quite a bit of stuff from quite a few different fiddle players who were kind enough to show me. And I appreciate that very much.
Born in Maysville, Oklahoma in 1918 and currently living in Montana, Dick Barrett is an extraordinary musician considered to be one of the best traditional fiddle players in the country. From the farm lands of Oklahoma to the cotton fields of west Texas, from Medicine Shows during the Great Depression to fiddle contests of today, Dick learned at the knees of remarkable, elder musicians who lived remarkable but humble lives. Among them were Dick's grandfather, who as a child in Georgia was hidden in a root cellar to avoid Civil War conscription; Dick's father, Sam, who taught his son simple waltzes; an African-American fieldworker known only by the name "Amen," who sang as he picked cotton; and, foremost, the legendary fiddler Major Franklin, the father of the Texas Style Breakdown. Today, Dick, himself a legend, and his talented wife Lisa, continue this deeply rooted traditional line by influencing new generations of fiddlers. From across the country gifted apprentices like John Owen Lardinois, Jr. and Preston Schmidt of North Dakota (through the North Dakota Council on the Arts' Traditional Arts Apprenticeship program) are now learning at the knees of Dick and Lisa, masters of traditional fiddle music. Listed below is the name of each musician, the instrument played by that musician, and the track numbers on which that musician played. If no track numbers follow, then that musician played that instrument on all the tracks.
Track List:
"Our lives have been enriched by the presence of John, Preston, and their families. To Jay for his tireless hours of playing and generally putting up with our nonsense. To David Swenson for his patience. To our families who have encouraged us in music, and lastly, to the Creator who allows us to live another day to enjoy music."
