call for entries: Maple River Winery

The Maple River Winery in historic downtown Casselton will showcase North Dakota artists year around. We are looking at showcasing 4 or 5 different artists in two month increments for our North Dakota Artist Series. Space will determine how many artists we can showcase.  We will not have any similar displays during each exhibit. This past summer we opened our tasting room with tremendous success. The cross section of visitors matches up well for showcasing North Dakota art. We would like to extend an invitation to all North Dakota artists to display their art.  Ongoing - Space available will be scheduled on a first come-first served basis.  If this activity goes well, we may consider expanding it to include other businesses in Casselton in 2008 to include more art and artists. Our itinerary for each of the two month series include the following: 1st Friday of showing: Free wine and cheese reception, compliments of Maple River Winery from 5pm to 8:30pm.  Flavored coffees, jellies, other ND products will also be served. Brochures will be distributed throughout the Fargo-Moorhead metro area promoting each exhibit.

The exhibits would need to be set up by the second of the month.  Exhibits will need to be taken down on the last day of the second month.  Items will be displayed at your risk.  We will not insure any items and we will not be responsible for any breakage or thefts.  We will be glad to set up any arrangement that will work on your end as well as ours.  Some artists have already expressed interest in having their products sold in our tasting room.  We expect to sell some artwork in our Pride of Dakota area of our tasting room after the exhibit.  We will decide on an individual basis what artwork we will carry in our tasting room.

Maple River Winery will promote each exhibit via: 1) Wine Club Newsletter; 2) Web site (www.mapleriverwinery.com); 3) Radio/Print; 4) Walk in traffic; and 5) Casselton Business Association and other organizations. Artists may possibly promote via: 1) Web sites; 2) Word of Mouth; and 3) Potential customers, etc. Artists will be encouraged to be present at the opening Wine and Cheese reception on the first Friday of the exhibit. Items may be sold at our winery during the exhibit providing we receive a commission on each item sold (10% suggested, negotiable). The potential exists to sell via our website as well.  Artists will be responsible for any shipping etc. if needed. Our goal is to have 20 exhibits open throughout Casselton by January 2008. If you are interested, please contact Greg Kempel at the Maple River Winery at 701-347-5900 or email to greg@mapleriverwinery.com. We look forward to promoting North Dakota artists.

call for artists: Upfront Gallery

As we continue to book exhibitions for 2007, we are in a continuous process of building a visual database of local and regional artists at the Upfront Gallery.  There is a computer in the gallery which houses artists' portfolios and is available for public perusal - kind of a way to display art that we aren't physically holding.  We would also like to make photographic portfolios available to the public - these will be housed in a bookshelf in the gallery.  This database will make local and regional artists more accessible to the public, and will hopefully also function as an outlet for commission work and/or sales. Any Questions? Email: upfront512@yahoo.com. 701-541-2640.

call for artists: Minnesota State Arts Board’s Artist Registry Open for Enrollment at www.percentforart.us

The registry is a collection of resumes and work samples of visual artists in all disciplines who would like to be considered for public art commissions and purchases. It is the most common way that the Percent for Art program finds artists for public art commissions and purchases in state buildings. Some things about the registry haven’t changed: There is no fee to join; There are no applications or slides to mail in; Everything can be done from your computer; It is non-juried; and all professional visual artists over age 18 who wish to work in the public realm are welcome to join. But we have added many new features! There are no longer any deadlines. Join any day of the year. You can enter your basic profile information now and come back later to add work samples. All your work will be saved for you! You can log in at any time to update your profile, make corrections, or change your work samples (up to 10 images allowed). Your profile will remain active so long as you log in at least once every four years. You’ll never have to reapply. Last year the Artist Registry was used for: MSU Mankato, Trafton Science Center, $90,000 Saint Cloud Technical College, $90,000 Mystery Cave Visitors Center, $12,000 Anoka Ramsey Community College, $58,500 MSU Mankato, Otto Recreation Facility, $58,500 Metropolitan State University Library, $100,000 Upcoming Projects: Saint Cloud State University; Central Lakes College Brainerd Campus; Central Lakes College Staples; Minnesota Veterans Home Luverne; and more. The $100,000 cap on Percent for Art budgets has been removed. We hope to see many large projects in the future that will enable us to commission artwork of national significance. Because the registry is online, we are now able to actively promote it for use by other commissioning agencies too. That means more of the right people can see your work. Join today at www.percentforart.us and help us in our quest to have the best Artist Registry in the country! Minnesota State Arts Board, (651) 215-1617 or email www.arts.state.mn.us.

Residencies/Internships/Fellowships/Scholarships (includes all disciplines)

residency: Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts Visual Arts Residency Program

Deadline: May 16, 2008. Founded in 1979 to promote the growth and development of the contemporary arts in Delaware, the DCCA is a non-collecting museum that presents exhibitions and programs that explore the boundaries of contemporary art, reflects the interests of artists and a culturally diverse audience, and brings current issues into focus. The DCCA believes that the arts are a vital part of society and that artists are catalysts for new ideas and change. The DCCA's programs, educational outreach, and services to the community enhance public understanding and appreciation of contemporary art. In 2000, the DCCA moved to its current location on Wilmington's Riverfront. The building has three large exhibition galleries as well as four smaller galleries dedicated to innovative projects, one-person shows of contemporary craft, and the work of artist members and DCCA studio artists. In addition to exhibition space, DCCA facilities include an auditorium, a studio-classroom, a museum store, 26 artist studios, and an apartment for artists-in-residence. Purpose of the Residency: to encourage the work of innovative artists; to infuse challenging ideas and issues into the community; and to forge relationships between artists and the community. During the residency, artists make a full-time commitment to collaborate with an under-served community group for up to eight weeks to create artwork based on issues relevant to the participants' lives. Artists work with the community group approximately 6 hours per week in addition to several hours of outside time necessary for fulfilling the goals of the residency. The residency also provides artists with the time, space, and financial assistance to work on their own independent projects. Residencies typically culminate in an exhibition, performance, or installation at the community site or at the DCCA. The DCCA may also schedule an exhibition of the artist's own work. The DCCA oversees the details of the residency, arranges for the community partnership in cooperation with the artist, seeks funding, and supports the planning and documentation processes. This includes a catalogue that features residencies with images, project summaries, and artists' biographies. For more information call 302-656-6466, or visit www.thedcca.org.

grant: The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts

Grant Program Guidelines [Revised as of January 18, 2008]. Grants are made on a project basis to curatorial programs at museums, artists' organizations, and other cultural institutions to originate innovative and scholarly presentations of contemporary visual arts. Projects may include exhibitions, catalogues, and other organizational activities directly related to these areas. The program also supports the creation of new work through re-granting initiatives and artist-in-residence programs. The work of choreographers and performing artists occasionally is funded when the visual arts are an inherent element of a production. Scholarly research undertaken towards the development of significant exhibitions is funded through Curatorial Research Fellowships. Institutionally-affiliated curators at any stage of their careers are eligible to apply. Research must be attached to a potential exhibition and curators must have the formal support of their director. Grants to curators do not preclude separate proposals from sponsoring institutions in any given grant round. Grants are also made to support efforts to strengthen areas that directly affect the context in which artists work. In 2006 the Foundation formally designated one of its grants The Wynn Kramarsky Freedom of Artistic Expression Award to recognize the work of organizations with a deep-seated commitment to preserving and defending the First Amendment rights of artists. Named in honor of the Foundation's former Board Chair, the grant rewards outstanding advocacy, legal, and curatorial efforts on behalf of those whose rights to free expression have been challenged. For more information, visit www.warholfoundation.org and click on Grant Guidelines, or email info@warholfoundation.org. Grant requests are reviewed twice a year in the spring and fall. The postmark deadlines for proposals are March 1 with notification on July 1, and September 1 with notification on January 1.
