NDCA Invites Participation in Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest
The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation partner with state arts agencies in all fifty states to sponsor Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest. Poetry Out Loud (POL) builds on the recent resurgence of poetry as an oral art form, as demonstrated by the slam poetry movement among our youth. By incorporating memorization and performance in the classroom, POL sets the stage for students to deepen their understanding of figurative language, word relationships and the nuances within word meanings. In addition, students learn about great poetry, explore their literary heritage and gain confidence in public speaking skills. Starting at the classroom level, teachers use free POL multimedia curriculum materials – a Teachers’ Guide, DVD, posters, and comprehensive website, all aligned to national standards – to augment their regular poetry curriculum with poetry recitation and a classroom-level competition. Winners advance to a school-wide contest, State Finals and, ultimately, to the National Contest held in Washington, D.C. Any school or homeschool group in North Dakota that teaches students in grades nine through twelve can register to participate in Poetry Out Loud. Public, private, parochial, alternative, independent, and Christian schools - as well as homeschool groups or organizations and school-sponsored afterschool programs - are encouraged to participate. The State Champion receives $200 and an all-expense-paid trip, with chaperone, to Washington DC to compete in the National Contest. The Champion's school receives a $500 stipend for the purchase of poetry materials. The runner-up receives $100, with $200 for his or her school library. At the National Contest, contestants compete to earn awards in the amounts of $1000, $5000, $10,000 and a grand prize of $20,000. All schools wishing to participate in the North Dakota POL program must officially register through North Dakota Council on the Arts. POL Teacher Resource materials will be mailed to all participating teachers. Registrations are due by November 1, 2014. To register, complete the form found at: http://ndpol.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/2/6/12265551/2015_registration_form.pdf. Bush Foundation awards grants to Jamestown organizations
The Arts Center in downtown Jamestown received a $190,220 grant from the Bush Foundation for further development of the Art Park. The South Central Dakota Regional Council also received a $121,000 grant to hold community meetings on the need for building inspector services in the nine county region. Both grants were through the Foundation's Community Innovation program. When the City of Jamestown began a land use and transportation plan, they asked for help to reinvigorate a blighted space located downtown. The partnership is engaging the community in a creative place-making process that includes artist-led “imagination conversations.” Residents of all ages and incomes share ideas about what a community arts space might look like, both programmatically and physically. "Tools for Results" Tool-Kit - a Resource for Non-profit Arts and Cultural Organizations
The Texas Commission on the Arts "Tools for Results" Tool-kit was developed as a resource for non-profit arts and cultural organizations in Texas and beyond. The Tool-kit is a collaborative project made possible with the help of many organizations that generously agreed to share their resources. The Tool-kit covers six topic areas: Fundraising & Development, Programs & Exhibitions, Cultural Tourism, Marketing, Advocacy, and Nonprofit Basics. Each section covers the basics, relevant concepts, best practices, things to consider, ideas for implementing change, common mistakes, ways to get started, do’s and don’ts, and how-to’s on a variety of topics. The “tools” are the sample forms, letters, documents, checklists, templates, and other resources. The intention is for nonprofits to take these “tools” and adapt them for their own purposes.
