Individual Artist Fellowship
Program Guidelines

The Individual Fellowship Program was established to recognize practicing artists residing in North Dakota with a monetary fellowship award. This program is designed to support professional artists with outstanding talent and ability to improve their artistic skills and enhance their career opportunities. Two fellowships of $2,500 are annually awarded. The North Dakota Council on the Arts (NDCA) reserves the right to not award either fellowship, based on panel review.

An applicant will be considered "professional" if they are pursuing their original artwork on an ongoing basis within an artistic discipline, and if they are pursuing it as a means of livelihood, either on a partial or total basis.

Collaborative works will not be accepted. Artists may submit collaborative work as evidence of artistic skill only if the applicant's role in the creation of the work is clearly defined. Works in progress are acceptable with an explanation of the work's goal in the Artist's Statement. The NDCA reserves the right to not forward any application deemed inappropriate for public consumption.

The NDCA reserves the right to use any or all submitted work for promotional purposes. Copyright registration is the sole responsibility of the applicant. A copy of all work submitted will be retained by the NDCA, extra copies will be returned to the applicant if a self-addressed stamped envelope is provided. The applicant must provide an English translation of any support materials or work samples in another language. Applicants should maintain a copy of the application and all work samples submitted to the NDCA.

NDCA Artist-in-Residence Program

North Dakota's Artist-in-Residence (AIR) Program is part of the Arts in Education Program and provides matching funds for schools and other non-profit organizations to bring artists into North Dakota schools (for pre-school through grade 12) to conduct residencies of three days or longer. Residencies include such activities as lecture/demonstrations, workshops, classroom projects, and community events. Residencies occur primarily during regular school hours at a school facility or after school. Residencies are designed to provide students, teachers and community members with hands-on experiences and personal interactions with working artists.

Artists may apply for inclusion to the Artist-in-Residence roster by submitting an artist application to the North Dakota Council on the Arts or partnering with a North Dakota school or non-profit organization willing to participate in the Artist-in-Residence Program. Applicants are encouraged to correlate their proposals to the educational goals for North Dakota students as established by the North Dakota State Content and Achievement Standards.

If you are interested in joining the NDCA's Artist-in-Residence roster contact the Arts in Education Director at 701-328-7593 or lehreth@nd.gov.
