NDCA Announces the Governor’s Awards for the Arts Call for Nominations
The Governor’s
Awards for the Arts are biennial awards presented to individuals,
organizations, educators, and businesses who consistently strive to better
their communities through their commitment to the arts. The Council asks for
your assistance in recognizing these people by your submission of
nominations for the 2007 Awards. Nominees are in every community. There are
many whose contributions are highly valued by those who know them, but whose
deeds often go unnoticed by most. You know them by their commitment,
interest, ownership and support; whether behind the scenes or in the
forefront. From the business people who give financial support, to the arts
organization that presents the arts, to the teacher who finds money to bring
the arts to his/her students; look for people who have helped plan, shape
and promote your area arts events.
For a
nomination form and complete instructions, please visit
www.nd.gov/arts; email
amschmid@nd.gov; call 701-328-7594; or write to ND Council on the Arts,
1600 E Century Avenue, Suite 6, Bismarck, ND 58503-0649. The nomination
deadline is November 15, 2006.
NDCA Grant Deadlines Approaching
Application deadline dates for the Council on the Arts grants are
approaching. Artist-in-Residence, Community Arts Access and Teacher
Incentive grants must be postmarked by November 1, 2006 for programs taking
place between January 1 and June 30, 2007. Early submission is strongly
encouraged for all programs. Also, a reminder that the Professional
Development and Special Projects grant applications are accepted throughout
the year, but must be postmarked no later than four (4) weeks prior to the
start of the event. Early submission of applications is recommended since
grant funds are limited and applications are reviewed on a first-come,
first-serve basis. For further information, contact the North Dakota Council
on the Arts at 701-328-7590; e-mail
amschmid@nd.gov or go online at:
www.nd.gov/arts/grants/grants.htm. These grants are supported by the
North Dakota Council on the Arts, a state agency, and the National Endowment
for the Arts. Funding is contingent on availability of funds.
Call for Ornaments for State Christmas Tree
NDCA invites
artists and craftspeople to provide handmade ornaments for the North Dakota
State Christmas Tree. The tree will be on display in the Memorial Hall of
the State Capitol in
Bismarck.
It will be lit during a public ceremony conducted by the Governor and Mrs.
Hoeven on December 7, 2006 at
5:00 p.m. Submitted ornaments can vary from traditional to contemporary arts.
Items that are commercially produced or made from kits are not eligible for
inclusion. This is a great art project for elementary classes, Scout troops,
4-H clubs, residents of assisted living centers, etc., as well as a great
family project. The theme is open and can be of the designer’s choosing.
Each ornament should include a brief one or two line description of the
ornament (naming the art form used or the special circumstances through
which it was created – such as through a class or senior center project).
Also include the name of the individual artist/craftsperson who created it.
A descriptive listing will be available at the ceremony and will be mailed
to everyone who submits an ornament. Ornaments must be received in the NDCA
office no later than Monday, November 27. All ornaments become the property
of the NDCA and will be hung on the state tree each ensuing year. For more
information, contact the NDCA at 701-328-7594 or email
amschmid@nd.gov.

October is Arts & Humanities Month
Governor John Hoeven has declared October 2006 as Arts &
Humanities Month for the state of North Dakota. This came by way of an official proclamation from
his office, which recognized that “the arts and humanities enhance and
enrich the lives of all citizens; and affect every aspect of life in
America today including
the economy, social problem solving, job creation, education, creativity,
and community livability.”
North Dakota’s
Arts and Humanities Month corresponds with a national celebration. The
National Arts and Humanities Month is sponsored by a coalition of national
organizations representing the arts and humanities. It provides all cultural
organizations and agencies the opportunity to highlight the work they do for
their communities. The celebration grew out of National Arts Week, which was
started in 1985 by the National Endowment for the Arts and Americans for the
Arts.

Conservation Assessment Program Announces 2006
Participants, 2007 Application to be Released October 6, 2006
The condition of collections in 110 museums in 39 states and the District of
Columbia will be assessed this year through the Conservation Assessment
Program (CAP). The 2006 recipients include the Michigan Maritime Museum,
Arizona State University Center for Meteorite Studies, the Mississippi
Museum of Art and the Adams Museum and House in Deadwood, South Dakota. To
view the list of 2006 CAP grant recipients, visit
www.heritagepreservation.org. CAP helps small to mid-sized museums of
all types, from art museums to zoos, obtain a general assessment of the
condition of their collections, environment, and historic buildings.
Following an on-site assessment by a conservation professional, the museum
receives a written report recommending priorities to improve collections
care. This report assists museums in educating staff and board members on
conservation practices, creating long-range and emergency plans, and raising
funds to improve the care of their collections. Forms for applying to the
FY2007 CAP will be mailed on Friday, October 6, 2006, to museums on the CAP
mailing list and will also be available on Heritage Preservation's Web site
at
www.heritagepreservation.org/CAP. Eligible participants will be
accepted into the program on a first-come, first-served basis, and
applicants are encouraged to mail their completed application as soon as
possible. The postmark deadline for applications is December 1, 2006. To be
added to the CAP application mailing list or for more information, call
