Bismarck Exhibits:

Feb 10-Mar 2 - The Bismarck Downtown Artist Co-op’s upcoming exhibit, Love Me, Love Me Not is a special Valentine’s show. Over 16 artists and 100 works of art will be on display at 222 N 4th Street. There are a variety of styles and media on display. Rec: Feb 10, 6-9pm. The reception is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Paul Noot at 701.323.4800 ext. 6050 or email bismarckdac@gmail.com

Thru Feb 25 - Caroline Doucette, Rugby and Dale Cook, Fargo will be featured artists at Bismarck Art & Galleries Association. Caroline Doucette’s exhibit “We Dream” exhibits strong contrasts, clean rich colors that give depth and strength to her work. Caroline has found with time and experimenting, which materials are best suited to her needs and her working habits that obtain the results that compliment her own personality. She works with a limited palette: red, blue, yellow, cool, and warm and uses hot pressed paper where the color will remain strong and vivid on the surface of paper. In “Unveiling Nature” artist Dale Cook exhibits his wood and alabaster creations. Using wood or stone, Dale brings out the uniqueness of each piece creating a form that complements the natural beauty. Dale has been working with his wood lathe for about ten years. He is a member of the American Association of Wood Turners and won Best in Category in the Grand Cities Art Fest in 2011. Member artist, Bobbie Lee is featured in the member gallery. She lives in Bismarck and works as a graphic artist at the Bismarck Tribune. 223-5986

Thru Mar - The winners of the Annual Governor’s Photography Contest are on display at the offices of Governor Jack Dalrymple, First Lady Betsy Dalrymple and the Attorney General’s Office. The annual contest is sponsored by North Dakota Tourism and AAA of North Dakota. There are 12 winning photos. State Capitol

Thru Sep 30 - A little more than 200 years ago, a young American Indian woman and her baby joined a group of about 30 men determined to paddle, walk, and ride from her home near the junction of the Knife and Missouri rivers all the way to the Pacific Ocean and back again. After an arduous journey of more than a year, they succeeded, and the young woman and her child returned to her home.  While the men of the expedition were hailed as great adventurers and explorers, the young woman was largely overlooked for almost 100 years. Near the beginning of a new century, however, women of a new generation, determined to create a larger world for themselves (including the right to vote), began to see that young woman – Sakakawea – as a symbol of pioneering female achievement. The exhibit, Creating Sakakawea, describes how this young woman became, next to Pocahontas, the best-known American Indian woman in the nation and a symbol of North Dakota. First displayed at the North Dakota Heritage Center from October 2010 to April 2011, the exhibit briefly moved into storage during the initial construction work on the expanded Heritage Center. Creating Sakakawea will replace the award-winning exhibit, How Does Your Garden Grow? Gardening in North Dakota. The exhibit explores what Sakakawea has meant to different people at different times in history, and how North Dakota’s Sakakawea statue exemplifies some of these different meanings.  Creating Sakakawea is produced by the State Historical Society of North Dakota (SHSND). Visitors to the Creating Sakakawea exhibit will be able to explore both the history of the state Sakakawea statue and what a young Indian woman has meant to the American people over the past 200 years. She is a blend of legend and mythology balanced on a narrow foundation of historical fact, who remains fascinating to all

Thru Dec - Two oil paintings by artist George Pfeiffer will hang in North Dakota Governor Jack Dalrymple’s office in the Capitol Building. The paintings are on loan to the capitol from the Plains Art Museum, which holds the works in its permanent collection. The two paintings are titled Dalrymple Farms, Casselton, and SheyenneRiverValley. Dalrymple Farms, Casselton, depicts the farm of Dalrymple’s grandfather. Both paintings were originally commissioned from Pfeiffer in 1983 by Norwest Bank in Casselton and subsequently donated to the Museum in 1999

Ongoing - Gallery 522, original artwork. 200 West Main, Bismarck

Ongoing - The Bismarck Downtown Artist Co-op has found a home in the former Bismarck Tribune Building, located at 222 N 4th Street. Six local artists have come together to form a Board of Directors. Mike Van Beek came up with the idea of getting a Co-op started in Bismarck and worked for months trying to find the perfect location. Paul Noot, Austin Schmaltz, Andrea Ficek, Ali LaRock and Melissa Gordon are founding members of the Board and Co-op. Please email bismarckartist@yahoo.com for more information or call 391-8803 or 323-4800 ext. 6050
