B.J. Buckley is a poet and a writer who has been working in arts-in-schools programs throughout the Rocky Mountain west, the Dakotas, and Alaska for almost twenty years. Her residencies all emphasize the process of writing. She frequently incorporates other art forms, such as bookmaking, painting, and origami; and she makes an effort to introduce her students to the best work of writers in their region and in other cultures. She has extensive experience working with senior citizens, American Indian students, students whose first language is not English, and students with special needs. B.J.

T.J. believes that the preservation of western and cowboy culture is very important and, as such, uses the art of cowboy poetry to pass along the same strong morals and values that he was raised with. His belief that children need to learn that they are a very significant link of preserving our western American heritage is a lesson that T.J. mixes with teaching cowboy poetry. "I believe in our roots and heritage," says T.J., "I've got a story to tell. We all need to stand up and protect the traditions and legacies we've inherited. I want to be an image for kids to look up to, and hopefully instill in them this same love of country and customs I know and respect. Without our heritage, our children lose focus. Without our children's focus, we lose our world." With this in mind, T.J.'s main objective is to utilize the natural talent and imaginations of students and give them confidence to believe in themselves while learning how to express themselves through cowboy poetry. Ceil Anne Clement has a Masters degree in Storytelling from East Tennessee State University. She involves children in the storytelling experience by telling stories from many genres: folk, literary, tall tales, and legends as well as personal and historical stories. Children evolve from story listeners who use active listening skills that require creative and predictive thinking to storytellers through a series of activities that emphasize the tools of the teller: voice and body language. She also uses oral communication as a way to improve language skills such as vocabulary, comprehension, sequencing, and story recall. Ceil Anne brings more than 30 years of classroom teaching, 15 of which have been spent telling and teaching stories to children of all ages. Ceil

Deborah is a published poet and educator whose residency will show students - through art, music and literature - that poetry isn't something that just sits on the page. Her workshops with students from grades 5-12 focus on playing with words, poetry as oral expression (complete with music), and using popular media to create fun and interesting poems and to reflect on meaning in contemporary poems. Longer residencies will involve creating a "Poetry Zone," a space that reflects the interconnectedness of the fine arts - music, art and poetry (writing). Deborah
Ford William Kennedy The Creative Writing Workshop mission is to inspire the writer hidden in all of us. Each student writer will discover their distinctive voice that creates an atmosphere, describes a character and that character's sense of yearning, inevitable conflict and resolution. Mr. Kennedy uses his own experiences as a writer, workshop participant and teacher, to demonstrate the importance of sharing stories and language. "…enthusiasm, organization, teaching skills, patience and experience made the class a very positive experience for my students. Excellent!" Bill Kennedy Box 763 Jamestown, ND 58402-0763 701-252-0498 bkennedy@csicable.netAlso known as The Poetry Diva, Linda Back McKay helps students celebrate the creative genius that exists within every person. Using word play, list making, visual art and other techniques, Linda engages students in the fun of possibility while they learn solid writing techniques. Students are introduced to a variety of poets and experiment with several poetic styles. The residency can be easily customized to fit needs and goals and can end with a group project, reading or performance. Linda Back McKay Storytelling is used to make writing easier for students and teachers. Sometimes the stories are personal events from our lives and sometimes they are original stories from our imaginations. I enjoy helping students of all ages to write fictional stories based on the subjects learned in class. Storytelling helps young authors to get a good strong picture in their minds to guide their writing. Storytelling is an entertaining, exciting learning tool.
