Plains Art Museum's Art = Food

Plains Art Museum recently began a new installation series in Café Muse, the museum’s dining area. Entitled Art = Food, the series invites artists to design and display site-specific artworks that will hang on the west walls of the café. The Museum is accepting proposals for future additions to the Art = Food series. Two to three projects will be chosen annually. For details on submitting a proposal, email Museum Director and CEO Colleen Sheehy at csheehy@plainsart.org. More information is available at 701.232.3821 or at www.plainsart.org.

ZAPPlication

ZAPP® enables individual artists to apply online to multiple art shows through one central Web site, www.ZAPPlication.org. The online application process also allows artists to directly upload digital images of their artwork for jury review. The result is that all artwork in the system is in a consistent, high-quality, digital format. The digital images are presented to the jurors of each show and the system allows them to score online.

Big West Arts Festival at Sheridan College

The Big West Arts Festival celebrates its eighth year as a large cultural event in the heart of the Sheridan College campus in Sheridan, Wyoming. Its site is nestled in the valley with the dramatic Big Horn Mountains to the west and the spacious, wide-open plains to the east.  Sheridan lies midway between the Black Hills of South Dakota and Yellowstone National Park. Sheridan College is sponsoring and hosting the festival on its beautiful campus. Northwest Community College District (NWCCD) is one of the seven community colleges in Wyoming that includes Sheridan College and Gillette College. Sheridan College is known for its strong academics, arts, and variety of technical programs. For more information about Sheridan College, visit www.sheridan.edu.  Sheridan County and the surrounding area is steeped in western history. It was the last prized hunting ground of Native Americans who hunted and fished this fertile valley and the region is rich in the history of the white man trailing through en route to the Montana gold fields. Many museums, historic sites, forts, battlefields, and a western art museum present this complex history.  In 2005 Sheridan received the honor of being named the #1 “True Western Town” by True West Magazine. Walking the streets of Sheridan (a great Main Street) is to discover and explore the West. Deadline: May 31, 2013. To learn more visit www.bigwestartsfestival.com/festival.asp.

Upfront Gallery

As we continue to book exhibitions for 2007, we are in a continuous process of building a visual database of local and regional artists at the Upfront Gallery. There is a computer in the gallery which houses artists' portfolios and is available for public perusal - kind of a way to display art that we aren't physically holding. We would also like to make photographic portfolios available to the public - these will be housed in a bookshelf in the gallery. This database will make local and regional artists more accessible to the public, and will hopefully also function as an outlet for commission work and/or sales. Any Questions? Email: upfront512@yahoo.com. 701-541-2640.

Minnesota State Arts Board’s Artist Registry Open for Enrollment at www.percentforart.us

The registry is a collection of resumes and work samples of visual artists in all disciplines who would like to be considered for public art commissions and purchases. It is the most common way that the Percent for Art program finds artists for public art commissions and purchases in state buildings. Some things about the registry haven’t changed: There is no fee to join; There are no applications or slides to mail in; Everything can be done from your computer; It is non-juried; and all professional visual artists over age 18 who wish to work in the public realm are welcome to join. But we have added many new features! There are no longer any deadlines. Join any day of the year. You can enter your basic profile information now and come back later to add work samples. All your work will be saved for you! You can log in at any time to update your profile, make corrections, or change your work samples (up to 10 images allowed). Your profile will remain active so long as you log in at least once every four years. You’ll never have to reapply. Last year the Artist Registry was used for: MSU Mankato, Trafton Science Center, $90,000 Saint Cloud Technical College, $90,000 Mystery Cave Visitors Center, $12,000 Anoka Ramsey Community College, $58,500 MSU Mankato, Otto Recreation Facility, $58,500 Metropolitan State University Library, $100,000 Upcoming Projects: Saint Cloud State University; Central Lakes College Brainerd Campus; Central Lakes College Staples; Minnesota Veterans Home Luverne; and more. The $100,000 cap on Percent for Art budgets has been removed. We hope to see many large projects in the future that will enable us to commission artwork of national significance. Because the registry is online, we are now able to actively promote it for use by other commissioning agencies too. That means more of the right people can see your work. Join today at www.percentforart.us and help us in our quest to have the best Artist Registry in the country! Minnesota State Arts Board, (651) 215-1617 or email www.arts.state.mn.us.
