Contemporary Indigeneity: The New Art of the Great Plains Juried Exhibition
The Great Plains Art Museum announces a juried exhibition focusing on Native American culture in the Great Plains region. Founded in 1980, the Great Plains Art Museum is home to a large collection of historical and contemporary works by Native North American artists. The Museum regularly hosts exhibitions that focus on contemporary Native identity as well as historical Native issues. This is the first juried exhibition hosted by the Great Plains Art Museum, by which we seek to enhance knowledge and appreciation about Native American contemporary arts in the Great Plains today. Eligible works should express some element of North American Indigenous Culture and have a contemporary or historical significance and placement within the Great Plains of North America. Works submitted for the juried exhibition must reflect the mission of the Great Plains Art Museum. The Great Plains Art Museum’s mission is: In keeping with the research, teaching, and outreach missions of the Center for Great Plains Studies and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the mission of the Great Plains Art Museum is to collect, preserve, research, and interpret the art and literature of the Great Plains region and to foster study and enhance appreciation, through changing exhibits and public programs, the history and creative spirit of the Great Plains of North America. This exhibition is expected to include the works of well- and lesser- known individuals whose work expresses the texture of Native American life in the Great Plains today. Selected by jury, this exhibition strives for a broad-ranging exploration which conveys the spectrum of contemporary visual art and fine craft in the Great Plains region, with a special emphasis on Native American culture. There are no media restrictions. A $15 donation for 1-5 entries is suggested. For further information visit the prospectus at www.unl.edu/plains/gallery/juriedprospectus.shtml; or send a self addressed stamped envelope to the Great Plains Art Museum, 1155 Q Street, Hewit Place, Lincoln, Nebraska 68588-0250. The Great Winter Crow Show
The Great Winter Crow Show at the Spirit Room, held in alternate years, is a non-competitive festive exhibition free of entry fees. It is intended to be a mad combining of energies and visual ingredients. The theme is the crow, the blackbird, and all their marvelous and malevolent associations. The crows and ravens keep us company in the wintertime and continue to remind us with their squawks and pacing that they keep a close eye on our behaviors and movements. Crows are known to play catch with twigs, to slide down snowy hills on their backs head-first, to soar and dive for entertainment, to carry shiny objects back to their nests for contemplation, and to collect hallucinogenic seeds in the fall, saving them to bring color to winter-white boredom. It gets slow in the winter for people too, a good reason to celebrate “the uncanny crow.” The Reverend Henry Ward Beecher said in the mid 1880s, “If men had wings and bore black feathers, few of them would be clever enough to match the crow.” This is a chance to put on your thinking cap and share your talents and good humor by entering the Great Winter Crow Show. General Guidelines: To enter the Crow Show, all deadlines must be met. There is no entry fee. Deadlines: Entry Registration Forms are due at PO Box 1657, Fargo, ND 58107 by Friday, February 24, 2012. 2012 Michael H. Kellicutt International Juried Photo Show, Through a Lens–Vibrant!
Vibrant and vibrate have the same latin root word: “vibrare” meaning to move rapidly and rhythmically to and fro. While vibrate means virtually the same thing in English, vibrant has additional connotations as it applies to brightness of light or color, or as in how liveliness or energetic is the given subject. “Through a Lens: Vibrant!” gives the photographer several options. Vibrant could apply to a light or hue in the composition, or it could apply to the subject, as to a person or in a street. It could even be stretched to apply to the process – check out the vibrance adjustment layer in photoshop. Which definition of “Vibrant!” will you choose? Awards: 1st Prize: $2,000; 2nd Prizes (two awards): $500; 3rd Prizes (six awards): $100. Entry fees: $20 for the first entry and $5 for each additional entry. The Rapid City Arts Council (RCAC) along with Destination Rapid City (DRC) Sculpture Call
The Rapid City Arts Council (RCAC) along with Destination Rapid City (DRC) announce an international call for artists interested in an on-site commission to sculpt the 21 granite boulders at Main Street Square in downtown Rapid City, SD. Mary Maxon, Curator for the Rapid City Arts Council announced the call stating that “this is an incredible opportunity for an artist, or team of artists, to create an important work of art which adds to the cultural and natural history of the region. Rapid City is uniquely located between the northern Great Plains, Badlands, and Black Hills. Our area is home to some of the most beautiful and inspiring sculptures. We are surrounded by natural works of art like Cathedral Spires, Jewel Cave, Harney Peak, Bear Butte and Devils Tower. We are also the home of infamous and monumental, manmade sculptures at Mt. Rushmore National Memorial and Crazy Horse Memorial.” The sculpture project is expected to be completed on-site by the artist(s) during the next 3-5 years. Patrick Wyss of Wyss Associates, the local firm selected to manage the sculpture project, expects interest from a wide range of talented artists for this large public art project. “Up to two million dollars in private donations is already in place to attract the right sculptor or team to complete this major work of art which will become a centerpiece for our community and the region.” Notice of this Call for Artists has been issued in numerous local, national and international publications. The selection process will take place over the next nine months. Interested artists are asked to submit their letters of interest, general background and experience information by April 17, 2012. Semifinalists will be invited to submit more detailed proposals by July 15, 2012. Finalists will be invited and reimbursed for two on-site visits and a detailed presentation of their vision for the Main Street Square Sculptures. This will occur from August 1 through November 1, 2012. The RCAC will recommend the preferred artist to Destination Rapid City in November, 2012. Upfront Gallery
As we continue to book exhibitions for 2007, we are in a continuous process of building a visual database of local and regional artists at the Upfront Gallery. There is a computer in the gallery which houses artists' portfolios and is available for public perusal - kind of a way to display art that we aren't physically holding. We would also like to make photographic portfolios available to the public - these will be housed in a bookshelf in the gallery. This database will make local and regional artists more accessible to the public, and will hopefully also function as an outlet for commission work and/or sales. Any Questions? Email: upfront512@yahoo.com. 701-541-2640.

Minnesota State Arts Board’s Artist Registry Open for Enrollment at www.percentforart.us
The registry is a collection of resumes and work samples of visual artists in all disciplines who would like to be considered for public art commissions and purchases. It is the most common way that the Percent for Art program finds artists for public art commissions and purchases in state buildings. Some things about the registry haven’t changed: There is no fee to join; There are no applications or slides to mail in; Everything can be done from your computer; It is non-juried; and all professional visual artists over age 18 who wish to work in the public realm are welcome to join. But we have added many new features! There are no longer any deadlines. Join any day of the year. You can enter your basic profile information now and come back later to add work samples. All your work will be saved for you! You can log in at any time to update your profile, make corrections, or change your work samples (up to 10 images allowed). Your profile will remain active so long as you log in at least once every four years. You’ll never have to reapply. Last year the Artist Registry was used for: MSU Mankato, Trafton Science Center, $90,000 Saint Cloud Technical College, $90,000 Mystery Cave Visitors Center, $12,000 Anoka Ramsey Community College, $58,500 MSU Mankato, Otto Recreation Facility, $58,500 Metropolitan State University Library, $100,000 Upcoming Projects: Saint Cloud State University; Central Lakes College Brainerd Campus; Central Lakes College Staples; Minnesota Veterans Home Luverne; and more. The $100,000 cap on Percent for Art budgets has been removed. We hope to see many large projects in the future that will enable us to commission artwork of national significance. Because the registry is online, we are now able to actively promote it for use by other commissioning agencies too. That means more of the right people can see your work. Join today at www.percentforart.us and help us in our quest to have the best Artist Registry in the country! Minnesota State Arts Board, (651) 215-1617 or email www.arts.state.mn.us.
