The Online Artist Archive is produced by the North Dakota Council on the Arts, which is the state agency responsible for the support and development of the arts throughout North Dakota. The agency receives funding from the state legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Artists currently living and working in the state.

1889 to Present
Artists who lived and worked in the state since statehood (November 2, 1889).

Before 1889
Artists who lived and worked in the state before statehood. Artists who were born or immigrated to North Dakota before November 2, 1889 and also lived and worked as an artist in the state after that date are listed under the "1889 to Present" category.

Just Passing Through
Non-resident artists. Many followed the trail forged by Lewis and Clark's Corps of Discovery while others lived in the state for only a brief time.
