A North Dakota native, Robert Matz studied at the University of North Dakota, where he received his Bachelor of Arts in education and Master of Fine Arts in painting and drawing.

He launched his career as an art educator in 1978 when he was placed in Bismarck as the first visual artist in residence with the Artist in the Schools Program in North Dakota. He is an artist and arts educator who has been with the Bismarck Public Schools system for the past 25 years.

He was featured with seven other North Dakota artists in the 2003-2005 North Dakota Blue Book.
