Beiler, Ida Zoe b. November 30, 1885; d. 1969 Discipline: Painting Although born near Lima, Ohio to parents [J. Clinton and Ida (Faze)] who recognized and encouraged their daughter’s artistic talent, Ida Zoe Beiler did not receive any formal art training until after she graduated from Lima College and Michigan State Normal College at Ypsilanti and enrolled at the Art Institute of Chicago. Within her first academic year there (1926-1927), she was awarded the Tuesday Art and Travel Club Scholarship and began to teach art classes in the area. She graduated in 1930, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and receiving Faculty Honorable Mention and Special Honorable Mention for her work. In 1931, Beiler relocated to Dickinson, North Dakota to become the director of the Art Department at the State Teachers College. In addition to her administrative and teaching duties there, she painted many oils and watercolors of landscapes, still-lifes, and portraits and presented several lectures on art to organizations around the state. She took a yearlong sabbatical starting in 1945, during which she returned to Chicago and earned a Master of Fine Arts degree after studying at the Art Institute and the University of Chicago. In 1949, Beiler’s name was added to the Honor Roll of the American Artists Professional League. She retired from teaching in 1953 and settled in Sarasota Florida, where she continued to paint at the Hartman Galleries. Her work has been exhibited all over the country, including three canvases shown at the National Exhibitions of Art in New York City. Her painting “Cowboy” is part of the private collection of the International Business Machines (IBM) Corporation while another painting, “Cattle Guard,” hangs in the North Dakota State Capitol Building in Bismarck. - Ben Nemenoff Bibliography:
