NDCA Long Range/Strategic Plan for current and future goals

In 2007, the North Dakota Council on the Arts celebrated it's 40th Anniversary. NDCA was established in 1967 by the State Legislature. It is the state agency responsible for the support and development of the arts and artists throughout North Dakota.

The Council's Board of Directors is currently composed of nine voting members appointed by Governor John Hoeven and one ex-officio member, First Lady Mikey Hoeven. The current Chairman of the Board is David "White Thunder" Trottier of Rugby, North Dakota. The board establishes policies and programs, and allocates grant funds based upon recommendations from panels composed of artists, arts administrators, educators, and arts patrons. The agency's professional staff implements the policies, manages the programs, and provides technical and informational services to the public.

Support for the Council comes primarily from two sources - the North Dakota State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts. The Council also is responsible for the North Dakota Cultural Endowment and has the authority to use interest from the fund for arts related activities. In FY2007, the Council funded 353 programs with grant awards totaling $793,797.49.
